Use of Marine Biofuels Begins on Work Vessels

Tokyo, Japan - November 25, 2024 - On November 21, 2024, Penta-Ocean Construction (hereinafter POC) started to use marine biofuel, which is provided by NX Shoji Co., Ltd. (President, Susumu Akita), a core company of the Nippon Express Holdings Inc.

POC’s work vessel, POCOM No. 12 (a cement deep mixing vessel), is now powered by biofuel. The B24 fuel, a 24% blend of FAME*1 produced from waste cooking oil with heavy oil A, powers the vessel. The B24 is a simple drop-in fuel that does not require engine replacement and reduces CO2 emissions by 24% as an environmentally friendly resource-recycling fuel. The FAME components are ISCC*2-certified and meet internationally recognized sustainability standards.

Offshore civil engineering work is characterized by higher CO2 emissions compared to land-based civil engineering work, primarily due to the use of heavy oil for navigation and towing of work vessels and light oil for crane operations. While the industry pursues reduction of CO2 emissions from work vessels, biofuels have a high potential for reducing CO2 emissions in our quest for carbon neutrality. Going forward, after evaluating the effect of biofuel use on vessel equipment, we will promote further reduction of CO2 emissions in combination with fuel efficiency improvement additives*3 and onshore power supply*4.

We will commit to promote initiatives to achieve carbon neutrality in all aspects, including not only our own construction business activities but also the procurement of construction materials and reduction of CO2 emissions from buildings in use.

*1 Fatty acid methyl ester: A type of fatty acid ester that are produced by an alkali-catalyzed reaction of fats or fatty acids with methanol
*2 International Sustainability and Carbon Certification
*3 These additives upgrade fossil fuels and improve fuel efficiency. They were used in some of POC’s fleet in FY 3/24 and are now introduced across our entire large-scale fleet in FY 3/25. We are now introducing it to work vessels owned by our subcontractors.
*4 A system that connects vessels to the local power grid while they are docked, allowing them to switch off their engines
