Penta-Ocean Construction Co., Ltd.
Received the Outstanding Civil Engineering Achievement Award at the Reiwa 5 Japan Society of Civil Engineers (JSCE) Award
Tokyo, Japan - July 17, 2024 - Penta-Ocean Construction Co., Ltd. (President Takuzo Shimizu) hereby announces that we received the Outstanding Civil Engineering Achievement Award at the Reiwa 5 Japan Society of Civil Engineers (JSCE) Award. JSCE pursues civil engineering progress, civil engineering industry development and enhancement of the competency level of civil engineers, and undertakes a wide variety of initiatives towards the above objectives. The Outstanding Civil Engineering Achievement Awards are bestowed upon innovative and excellent technologies and projects in infrastructure planning, design, construction, operation and maintenance, which have been recognized to make a notable contribution to civil engineering progress and social development.
The awarded project involved the construction of the third jetty at the Mitsukojima pier, the largest receiving terminal for industrial salt in Japan. In an attempt to accommodate larger cargo vessels and thereby ensuring stable supply of salt, the construction proceeded while keeping other existing facilities of the pier in use. At 18m below the sea surface, the large-scale jetty measuring 240m in length and 30m in width had to be constructed in a limited construction time, with full commitment to construction safety, quality and cost reduction. The solution was the development and introduction of a precast jetty construction method using super-sized RC void blocks. In addition, we newly developed connecting methods to join precast blocks: the Sleeve Connection Method for connection to pile heads, and the Double Square Joints for in-between of blocks. Following the establishment of practical design procedures for the methods through structural tests and results analyses, we applied the methods to the project and confirmed their excellent workability over water.
Going forward, we will continuously make a contribution to civil engineering progress aiming at further improvement of productivity.
