Order Received for Port Works of Ultra Super Critical Coal-Fired Power Project in Bangladesh

Penta-Ocean Construction Co., Ltd. (President Takuzo Shimizu) has received an order for the Port Works of Package 1.2 of Matarbari Ultra Super Critical Coal-Fired Power Project from Sumitomo Corporation. The contract sum is approximately JPY 162 billion, which is the largest project that we have solely received so far. The construction period is 77 months with an expected completion date in January 2024.


The Package 1.2 of Matarbari Ultra Super Critical Coal-Fired Power Project is a part of Japan’s initiative towards exporting its high-quality infrastructure. In order to respond to the recent increase of electricity demand in Bangladesh, the country’s largest power plant to be constructed in Matarbari District, located in the southern part of the country. The main contract was awarded to the consortium of Sumitomo Corporation, IHI Corporation, and Toshiba Corporation, by the Coal Power Generation Company Bangladesh Limited (CPGCBL) as the ODA loan project provided by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).


Penta-Ocean will undertake the port works, such as the dredging of a 14km access channel for coal cargo ships, construction of the bund to mitigate sedimentation, and reclamation and land development works for the power plant ground site. The Company was awarded the contract for the temporary channel dredging as part of the preparation work (Package 1.1) of this project by CPGCBL, and it was completed in April 2017. This new order underscores the value of our technological skills, strength and management capabilities, we have brought into previous work in a remote and challenging environment.


Penta-Ocean has been continuously engaged in the ODA projects, and delivered several infrastructure related works with a focus on marine engineering works. Going forward, we will continuously endeavor to contribute to the growth and the development of human resources of developing countries.
