Order received for subway construction work in Singapore
-First construction company to win three construction contracts for the Thomson Line-

July 30, 2014

Penta-Ocean Construction Co., Ltd. (President Takuzo Shimizu) has received an order as a member of Joint Venture together with Bachy Soletanche Singapore Pte Ltd from the Singapore Land Transport Authority (LTA) for the construction of the Orchard Station and surrounding tunnelling works (T219 construction area) on the Thomson Line of the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) System (subway and elevated railway).
This was the closing bid for Thomson Line-related construction works, with contractors for all 25 major civil contracts being determined.
The amount of the order received for the joint venture is 40.4 billion yen, and construction is scheduled to be completed in 78 months by December 2020. Of this, the amount of the order received by the Company is 22.2 billion yen. The Company also received an order for the construction of the Woodlands North Station and surrounding tunnelling works on the Thomson Line in Dec 2013, and an order for the construction of the Bright Hill (Sin Ming) Station and surrounding tunnelling works in Feb 2014. This is the seventh order received including orders for other MRT construction works in the past.

Intense competition for construction works in Singapore between various construction companies from Japan, Singapore, China, South Korea and Australia continue as ever before. The site of this construction work is adjacent to the high rise building ION Orchard, for which construction work was carried out by the Company. The Company’s record of successfully completing underground construction work for ION Orchard and its record of managing construction projects in the most bustling shopping quarters in Singapore were held in high regard, leading to the Company receiving this order.

Since entering the Singapore market in 1964, the Company has participated in numerous large-scale projects in Singapore. The Government of Singapore plans to double the size of the current MRT System to cover around 360 km by 2030 and is due to call for bids for multiple lines in the future. It is also expected to proceed with other large-scale construction efforts such as harbour construction and so forth. The Company considers Singapore to be one of the key markets for its overseas business and – backed with a wealth of experience in the field – the Company will continue to proactively expand the business while keeping an eye on the bottom line.
