New Muroran Factory Received the Grand Prize at Northland Energy Conservation and New Energy Awards 2023(Reiwa 5)

Tokyo, Japan - February 29, 2024 - Penta-Ocean Construction Co., Ltd. (President Takuzo Shimizu. hereinafter POC) received the Grand Prize at the “Northland Energy Conservation and New Energy Awards 2023”, hosted by the Hokkaido Bureau of Economy, Trade and Industry, for its “100% Renewable Energy Factory Utilizing Solar and Hydrogen Power(New Muroran Factory)”. The aim of the “Northland Energy Conservation and New Energy Awards” is to promote energy saving and utilization of renewable energies by awarding exemplary organizations or individuals who have achieved outstanding results in effective use, development, and wider implementation related to energy conservation and new energies in Hokkaido. President Shimizu attended the ceremony held in Sapporo City on February 21, 2024, and was awarded the commendation certificate and a plaque from Mr. Iwanaga, Director General of the Hokkaido Bureau of Economy, Trade and Industry.

In order to contribute to the achievement of carbon neutrality, POC constructed the new Muroran Factory, “a 100% renewable energy utilizing solar and hydrogen power”. While offshore wind power is receiving increasing attention as the driver for the expansion of renewable energy capacity, the new factory engages in manufacturing temporary steel structures for offshore wind construction, including racks used for the assembly of components at the base port and their sea transportation, on top of the factory’s original focus on bridge structure fabrication. Furthermore, because the manufacturing process of the temporary steel structures utilizes green electricity produced by the renewable energy sources, the products are also bringing benefits to the decarbonization initiatives of clients. With regard to the renewable energy used at the factory, solar power is the main energy source, but hydrogen generation is actively used; Green hydrogen is produced from solar power in a water electrolysis apparatus and then stored in hydrogen storage alloys to generate electricity by fuel cells. We conduct regular monitoring of green hydrogen generation in order to acquire expertise in hydrogen utilization and determine optimal operational methods for hydrogen production and hydrogen power generation. In the office building, which acquired the highest rank of “ZEB” certification, we verify the effects of various energy-saving initiatives in an effort to apply these results to future proposals to clients.

Through the initiatives at the new Muroran factory which runs on 100% renewable energy, we will continuously work on our own the carbon neutral efforts and make our share of contribution towards achievement of carbon neutrality.
