Final V-Block Segment for Immersed Tube Tunnel

Construction of submerged tube tunnels necessitates the final closure and sealing of the gap using a final joint. In order to accomplish this challenging task, the V-Block construction method, developed by Penta-Ocean, involves the preparation of the final tunnel segment to be built on shore at quality-controlled yards, which is then transported to the site and lowered into place by a large floating crane. Water tightness is achieved owing to forces generated by the difference between the upward and downward water pressure, in addition to the weight of the V-Block itself. Following installation, the V-Block and the adjacent tunnel tubes on both sides are permanently connected.

Laborsaving qualities

Since the V-Block is prefabricated at an off-site assembly yard, the amount of on-site work involving divers is minimized, increasing safety and efficiency.

Improvement of quality for final joint construction

Prefabrication of the V-Block at off-site assembling yard provides better quality.

Flexible joints (Optional)

Flexible joints can be added at the V-Block centers to absorb seismic forces, as is the case with ordinary joint portions of embedded tunnels.
