Vacuum consolidation method using cap-attached prefabricated vertical drains

Vacuum consolidation method using cap-attached prefabricated vertical drains This is a soft ground improvement method using a piece of prefabricated vertical drain (PVD), Using this method, a PVD is capped at the top and inserted into the soft seabed clay and vacuum suction is applied to reduce the atmospheric pressure so that the pore water pressure is reduced and the effective stress is increased accordingly. Since the placement of airtight sheeting on the surface to maintain air-tightness is not required, this method is far superior to conventional methods in terms of cost effectiveness and labor saving.

Reducing waste volume at disposal sites at sea

Since the airtight sheeting is required due to using of the cap attached with the PVD at top, this method can be applied to the ground under the sea. An example of this application is to reduce the volume of waste at the final disposal site.

Increasing surcharge operations

In the case where surcharge is used in combination with this method, banking operations can be accelerated.

Sealing works against the ground surface not required

Since a surface or subsurface soil layer is used as the sealing layer, an airtight sheet on the ground surface, which is usually required by conventional method, is unnecessary.
